The Stretch Candidate methodology

If you walked into a room with 1,000 random people, what could you confidently say you’re better at than all of them?

Did that make you think? Good. And your answer would tell me a lot.

A stretch candidate is someone whose potential extends beyond their current experience. My methodology uncovers the intangibles that reveal how far they can go.

The seven intangibles

01.

Inner drive

Has their own fuel source. Sets personal ambitions and pursues them without needing someone else to provide the motivation.

02.

Deep curiosity

Doesn’t settle for surface answers. Digs deeper, asks better questions, and genuinely wants to understand why things work.

03.

Intellectual honesty

Sees themselves clearly, recognizes what they don’t know, and is willing to change their mind when the evidence calls for it.

04.

Opinionated edge

Thinks independently, forms strong points of view, and has the conviction to challenge conventional thinking. Has real taste.

05.

Social intelligence

Reads the room, understands what matters to others, and adapts how they communicate to bring people along.

06.

Wired for impact

Sees the bigger picture, connects actions to outcomes, and recognizes where effort will make the greatest difference.

07.

Truly gives a damn

Notices what matters, takes ownership, and cares enough to act, even when nobody asks.

The interview gathers the evidence

I explore real experiences and how people think.

Specific decisions, actions, outcomes, and the thinking behind them.

I create opportunities to demonstrate potential.

Unexpected questions and unfamiliar problems reveal how someone thinks in real time.

I challenge and observe live reactions.

A challenge to an assumption or a piece of live feedback reveals a lot about how someone would behave in the role.

I pattern match to make an assessment.

Past experiences, thinking in the moment, and responses to new information build a clearer picture of someone’s strengths and potential.

A stretch isn’t a leap of faith.

It’s a decision informed by what someone has done, a clear assessment of how they think, and evidence of their potential to do what they haven’t yet.
